Sara Louise Petty - Ode to Cardigan(s) / by Sara Louise Petty

When Taylor Swift’s new album Folklore was released I was excited to give it a listen. 1989 was a masterpiece in Pop music, and I also really enjoyed Ryan Adam’s complete remake of 1989 - I thought it was cool another musician dedicated an entire album to cover another musicians work. The difference in styles but with same lyrics highlighted the beautiful songwriting of Taylor Swift and her co-writing team.

I had enjoyed some of her more uptempo music for Hula Hooping, which is one of my favorite things to do to keep in shape. When I first listened to Folklore, I was a little disappointed as nothing truly grabbed me first time, everything was somewhat downtempo and mellow. As August went on, I gave it another try whilst in a new frame of mind. The downtempo started to feel comforting and I got pulled deeper into her storytelling. I wrote a text to my friend “Taylor Swift wrote a song about me!”, my friend replied “That’s how music works”. Sometimes songs can become quite personal and draw you into deep thoughts.

Quite a few of the songs felt so relatable to me, and the subtle melodies and thought provoking lyrics were beautiful.

Cardigan is reminscinct of another of Taylor Swift’s songs - but I love it still.

“And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed,

You put me on and said I was your favorite”

Other stand out songs I loved were “Mirrorball” and “The Last Great American Dynasty” and “Mad Woman”. I loved she recorded a song with Bon Iver, “Exile” which is heartbreaking - as we have “all seen this film before”. “Mirrorball” made me smile as I am a lover of crystal balls, anything that shimmers and sparkles. When I first moved to NYC, I put a Mirror Disco ball in my East Village studio and held fabulous late night (after the bars closed!) parties, with cosmopolitans that were very Breakfast At Tiffany’s, with broken futons and days of cleaning after!

As a Fashion Designer, I created an ode to Cardigan; here is some Fall Winter 2020 Cardigan inspiration.
